Is Eliot talking about the Eastern circle here? Hardly. He is talking about a vision of life in which the great circular motions of the universe—the changing seasons, the circling planets, the generations and civilizations that rise and fall—are framed within a larger movement in which the soul, and the cosmos itself, do not suffocate in an endless tumbling circularity but rather surge forward and ever forward, toward a culmination beyond the power of words to describe; a culmination that Eliot hinted at in the Four Quartets’ famous last lines:
